Family Courts are not what they seem to be. Unbound by law and unbeholden to transparency, an epidemic of extreme injustice, serious harm, and judicial misconduct is occurring through this hidden Court system. The reason? In the United States, sending children to the wrong parent brings in billions in revenue. Unfortunately, the wrong parent is too often their tormentor, rapist, and murderer.

The situation is now so serious and so widespread that it is affecting democracy. Recently, a United Nations Special Rapporteur wrote a report to the Human Rights Council. All these topics were discussed at a roundtable at 12 noon ET / 5 pm London Time on Sunday, August 27, 2023.

Dr. Bandy X. Lee, one of the country’s most distinguished forensic psychiatrists, who taught for 17 years at the Yale School of Medicine and the Yale Law School, led a project group for the World Health Organization’s Violence Prevention Alliance, and helped to expose the violence and inhumanity in U.S. prisons, has now taken on the topic of Family Courts, informed by her own family’s exposure. Domestic abuse survivors say children are being put at risk by the family courts. Previous research by the BBC found that at least four children have been killed in the past five years by a parent with a known history of domestic violence, after a family court granted access.

Panorama reveals harrowing footage and other evidence of domestic violence incidents that now account for a third of all recorded assaults with injury in England and Wales. Filmed by police response teams equipped with body-worn video cameras, this new style of evidence gathering is helping to bring perpetrators to justice. But years of coercive control and terror often lie behind the violence. Panorama hears from wives, mothers and children who have also endured non-violent domestic abuse, which is now likely to be made a criminal offence in its own right.
